In the end, they always blink. Governments have been forced into rescuing car manufacturers for decades and the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of General Motors differs only in its scale and design.

GM is likely to file for Chapter 11 today with $50bn of backing from the US government to push it through bankruptcy and out again in a slimmer form.
