Mandelson unveils small business plan

Taxpayers will commit to guaranteeing up to £21bn of bank lending for small and medium-sized businesses until 2011, under plans unveiled on Wednesday by Peter Mandelson, business secretary.

Launching the scheme Mr Mandelson said he hoped the loan guarantees would help businesses to refinance up to £20bn ($29.2bn) of existing loans, put in danger by dwindling bank lending.
