Obama reassures Canada on open trade

Barack Obama has assured Canada that the US remains committed to open markets but renewed his call for strengthened labour and environmental protections in the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Speaking after talks with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa on Thursday, the US president said he believed Nafta could be amended without disrupting the “extraordinarily important” trade relationship between the two countries.
