Rushdie fails to make the grade for Booker prize contenders

Two debut novels have been shortlisted for the UK's Man Booker Prize, announced yesterday, but Sir Salman Rushdie will not win this year after his much-fancied latest book was not selected.

Aravind Adiga and Steve Toltz are the two firstnovelists, shortlisted for their books The White Tiger and A Fraction of the Whole respectively.
