Doubling air levy 'will raise emissions of gas'

As Easter holidaymakers pass through Britain's airports, new research has emerged suggesting Gordon Brown's doubling of air passenger duty will have the "perverse" effect of raising greenhouse gas emissions.

Describing the increase in the flat-rate tax per flight as "daft", Richard Tol of Ireland's Economic and Social Research Institute has calculated that it makes flying to far-flung destinations more attractive than short hops.
