Spain's market regulator resigns over Endesa bid

Manuel Conthe, the Spanish stock market regulator, resigned yesterday after accusing the government of eroding the independence of its regulatory agencies.

Mr Conthe told parliament he was stepping down because government appoin-tees on the board of directors of the National Stock Market Commission (CNMV) had blocked an investigation into a controversial bid by Enel of Italy and Acciona, its Spanish partner, for Endesa, Spain's largest utility.
