Byrd enters history books as longest-serving senator

Robert Byrd spent this week the same way he has spent much of his 48 years in the Senate, fighting to get his way on a spending bill.

And the West Virginia Democrat plans to treat Monday – when he will become the longest-serving senator in US history – just like any other day. “He’s going to do it the same way he always does it: he gets up, has his coffee and comes to work,” a top aide said.
