In defence of the standby mode

The need for consumers to turn appliances off rather than leave them in standby mode may be rendered obsolete by technology.

Scientists at the Cologne Institute for Economic Research have calculated the differences in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions when the most advanced computer monitors and television sets are either turned off or left on standby - and found only marginal savings.
