Hizbollah fails in quest for more legitimacy

The surprise victory of the March 14 pro-western alliance in Lebanon’s parliamentary elections was particularly poignant for its members.

The bloc had won the previous elections in 2005, after the killing of Rafiq Hariri, the former premier and Sunni leader of the Future Movement that leads the alliance, and the subsequent ousting of Syrian troops from Lebanon. But MPs have since braved a continuing campaign of political assassinations.
