Church review threat to clergy 'jobs for life'

The "job for life" status of Church of England vicars, based on traditions going back centuries, is under threat as a result of proposed changes in employment rights to be debated today at the General Synod, the church's parliament.

A review of Clergy Terms of Service, published last month, called for the end of the system under which Anglican priests own the freehold of their churches and vicarages, making it difficult to sack them.
