Chávez plans to seize telecoms and utilities

Hugo Chávez, Venezuela's leftwing president, last night fulfilled his radical pledges with sweeping nationalisation plans for the country's main telecommunications company and the biggest private power group.

He also said existing "strategic association" projects that process heavy crude oil in the Orinoco belt, which account for about a quarter of output from the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, should become state property.
