Overview: Fed surprises with lowered lending target

The Federal Reserve caught financial markets by surprise on Tuesday as it lowered its target for overnight lending from 1 per cent to between zero and 0.25 per cent – the lowest level on records dating back to 1954.

US stocks and Treasury bonds extended early gains after the central bank’s historic move and the dollar weakened against the euro and the yen.
