Building societies balk at levy for bank failures

The chief executive of Nationwide has warned that Britain’s biggest building society will have to pay £250m into the industry compensation scheme.

Graham Beale said it was “desperately unfair” that risk-averse building societies were liable for hundreds of millions of pounds to be paid into the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
