Plea for ‘revolution’ in policing protests

The police must launch a “quiet little revolution” in the way they deal with protests or risk a “sad erosion” of public confidence, the author of an independent report on the G20 summit demonstrations warned on Tuesday.

Denis O’Connor, chief inspector of constabulary, said police forces must change well before the 2012 London Olympics to more sophisticated tactics that reflected their duty to enable peaceful protests to take place.
