Fuel price rises force drivers to shift gear

Soaring fuel prices combined with a slowing economy are bringing about the once unthinkable: a change in US citizens’ driving and vehicle-buying habits.

The average price of regular petrol on Tuesday matched the high of $3.227 a gallon set last May, according to a daily survey of filling stations by AAA, the US motoring club.
