SBC talks with AT&T could see $16bn deal

SBC Communications, the second-largest US telephone company, is in advanced talks to acquire AT&T in a deal that could be worth as much as $16bn, according to people involved in the negotiations.

A takeover would mark the end of AT&T's 120-year history as an independent company, and represent a big step in the consolidation of the US telecommunications industry.
