Obama retreats on police 'stupidity' in Gates race row

Moving to defuse an ill-tempered controversy over race, US President Barack Obama yesterday backed away from comments in which he accused police of stupidity after a black academic was handcuffed in his own home.

Mr Obama said he had spoken to Sergeant Jim Crowley, a Cambridge, Massachussetts, police officer at the centre of a storm over the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, an African-American Harvard academic and friend of the president.
