Merkel stands to gain from quirk in polling

A quirk in the German voting system could allow Angela Merkel, chancellor, to prevail in the election on Sunday even if her favoured centre-right coalition fails to win an outright majority.

But the result could trigger an unprecedented political row in Berlin, with the opposition claiming a government reliant on this electoral peculiarity would be illegitimate. There are already threats to challenge the results in the courts.
