Brussels moves on animal testing

The European Commission’s long-awaited plans to strengthen protection of animals in research across the EU, announced on Wednesday would ban experiments with great apes but allow laboratories to continue working with monkeys.

The proposal would extend the ethical evaluations required before experiments with animals were authorised and set minimum requirements on housing and care.
