Smith defends ‘fair’ expenses claims

Jacqui Smith on Tuesday brushed off calls to resign as she embarked on a media offensive to defend her “fair and reasonable” use of parliamentary expenses.

The home secretary has become a lightning rod for growing public anger over MPs’ expenses, after she apologised for the “bad mistake” of claiming back the cost of two adult movies watched by her husband.
