Montblanc’s Rs.1.1m, 18-carat gold-and-silver Mahatma Gandhi fountain pen was conceived as a way to raise the brand’s connection to India as the country’s fast-growing luxury market expands.

Instead, the company’s commemoration of the man Indians revere as Father of the Nation ended when it was forced last month to make a humiliating court apology and suspend sales of the hand-crafted writing instruments in India.
