Global sales give IBM earnings boost

IBM on Wednesday brushed aside fears that the US economic slowdown and dislocation in the financial industry had hit broader spending on information technology, as it reported surprisingly robust earnings for the opening months of the year.

Coming amid evidence on Wednesday that global PC sales were holding up better then expected, and following an optimistic earnings forecast from Intel the day before, the news helped to ease some of the jitters that have surrounded the technology industry this year.
