Alberto Vilar, the Cuban-American technology investor, was able to keep his lavish 30-plus-room apartment at 860 UN Plaza despite losing billions of dollars after the bursting of the tech bubble.

With his love for music, which has made him one of the world's biggest opera philanthropists, the 64-year-old bachelor's other passion is his home, filled with furniture and paintings.
