Muted welcome for mortgage bonds

The UK guarantee scheme for new mortgage-backed bonds got a cautious welcome in markets on Thursday as a step in the right direction, although market participants did not expect the scheme to spark a wave of issuance.

The scheme, announced as part of Wednesday’s Budget, aims at promoting a recovery of the securitisation markets that were key to the huge growth in mortgage markets during the boom.
