Carmakers on economy drive at Detroit show

For years, General Motors has welcomed visitors to its stand at the Detroit auto show with Coney dogs – hot dogs topped with chilli, cheese and onions.

Not this year. The Coney dogs are among many casualties of belt-tightening by carmakers that will be evident at the industry’s biggest North American trade show, which starts on Sunday.
