King warns of ‘painful adjustment’ ahead

Mervyn King, Bank of England governor, on Tuesday called for a series of measures to prevent another Northern Rock-style crisis and of months of “painful adjustment” as the problems in credit markets worked themselves out.

Mr King used his appearance before MPs on the Treasury select committee to defend the Bank’s role in the Northern Rock debacle, though he admitted shortcomings in the Bank’s communications strategy, including his own failure to explain the Bank’s strategy in August.
