Economy escapes lasting damage from quake

Although the extent of the humanitarian disaster from Monday’s earthquake continues to spread, the impact on the Chinese economy is likely to be only modest, economists said on Tuesday.

The earthquake’s epicentre, just north of Sichuan’s provincial capital Chengdu, is in a largely mountainous region that does not contain significant industrial or agricultural activity.
