South Africa’s deputy health minister, widely credited with turning round the government’s Aids strategy, has been sacked, prompting fears of a return to the government’s previous unorthodox policies on the disease.
President Thabo Mbeki’s decision to fire Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge late on Wednesday was condemned by opposition parties, the country’s largest labour federation Cosatu and the anti-Aids Treatment Action Campaign.
