Clinton and McCain win big California prize

John McCain solidified his lead in the contest for the Republican party’s presidential nomination, capturing California, Super Tuesday’s biggest prize, while Hillary Clinton’s critical victory there kept the Democratic contest open.

In spite of Mrs Clinton’s massive west-coast victory - which contributes more than a fifth of the delegates necessary to become the nominee – Barack Obama, her rival for the Democratic nomination, appeared to win an edge in the crucial delegate count, according to some news outlets.
