Adam D’Angelo, Facebook’s leading technology guru and close confidant of Mark Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old chief executive, has decided to leave the fast-growing internet company.

The surprise departure comes as the social network attempts to move beyond its quirky startup beginnings to cement its rise into the ranks of the world’s leading internet companies.
