European shares close narrowly higher

Lafarge, one of the world’s largest cement manufacturers, on Thursday endured a volatile session on rumours that it would today tap the market for extra funds.

Talk that the heavily indebted company was considering a rights issue have been circulating for several months, reaching a peak ahead of its full-year results statement due today.
