Apartheid casts its long dark shadow on the game

If you stand on Table Mountain at night and look down at Cape Town, you see a city of lights. Beside it is the railway, and beyond that are the so-called “black spots”: “Coloured” townships without lights. These are the Cape Flats, home to many of South Africa’s best footballers.

Benni McCarthy of the UK team Blackburn Rovers, the nation’s great hope for 2010, comes from the Cape Flats. So do former South African stalwarts such as Benni’s friend Quinton Fortune, and Shaun Bartlett.
