Sean FitzPatrick’s resignation as chairman of Anglo Irish Bank marks a stunning end to one of the most remarkable careers in Irish banking.

Having abandoned a career as a chartered accountant for banking, Mr FitzPatrick took over as chief executive of what was then the City of Dublin Bank in 1986.
