Global overview: Gloom turns to euphoria

A dramatic week in financial markets saw the mood among investors swing from gloom to euphoria as a resurgence of worries about subprime lending and a credit market sell-off was countered by a huge bid in the metals and mining sector.

Equities endured a rollercoaster ride, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average following up a sharp slide on Tuesday with its biggest one-day rise for more than two years on Thursday.
