Cameron ‘ready for difficult, unpopular rule’

David Cameron put his party on notice that it would inherit an “economic mess” at the next election, warning that an incoming Conservative government could be forced to take “difficult and unpopular” decisions and could face protests.

But in a sombre speech to the Tory conference, Mr Cameron insisted he had the “character and judgment” to take tough decisions, which aides admitted could include a tough squeeze on public spending and possibly tax rises.
