Italy doubts US account of Iraq shooting

Gianfranco Fini, Italy’s foreign minister, said on Tuesday the killing of an Italian secret service agent in Iraq by US forces had been a tragic accident, but added that Rome did not believe the US military’s version of events.

Mr Fini told parliament Nicola Calipari, who was killed by US troops as he rescued an Italian hostage, had made “all the necessary contacts” with US authorities in Baghdad.
