As music venues go, Bentwaters airbase has to be one of the weirdest. South of Aldeburgh near the Suffolk village of Rendlesham, this former US air force command post is a cold war relic. Huge barn-like structures rise out of the ground between long concrete runways as if lost from their prairie homes. Semi-cylindrical corrugated iron hangars, which once hid who knows what, squat like giant larvae.
It was here, in 1980, in woods just beyond the perimeter fence, that the Rendlesham Incident took place. A large metallic triangular shape illuminated the entire forest with white light, left some radiation and sent all the local animals crazy. Unsurprisingly, 27 years on, the internet is rife with claims about a covered-up close encounter.
