Spending squeeze could hit the poor

The impact of a squeeze on public spending could negate much of the apparent redistribution from rich to poor in the tax changes unveiled on Monday, the Institute for Fiscal Studies said on Tuesday.

Robert Chote, director, said: “Those who are hailing the chancellor’s return to overt redistribution from rich to poor may wish to pause briefly and consider who might be affected by the squeeze on public spending.”
