In February, when Alex Barker wrote a feature about bingo, more Britons visited bingo clubs each week than went to church or attended Premier League football matches. But the smoking ban has taken its toll, and the players - typically single or widowed working-class women over the age of 45 - are finding themselves part of a diminished community.
