California in push to join Fed programme

The state of California is lobbying the US government to be included in a plan to bolster the money markets even as signs emerged that credit conditions might be easing for public entities.

In an effort to unfreeze credit, the Federal Reserve this week said it would buy short-term debt, known as commercial paper, which banks and corporations rely on to fund day-to-day operations and which has dried up in recent weeks.
