Tougher drug trial rules hit research

Tougher British regulations on human drug experiments triggered by last year’s disastrous “elephant man” clinical trial are driving medical research out of the UK, pharmaceutical groups have warned.

As a new regime for scrutinising high-risk drugs comes into effect this month, new data show a number of companies have delayed their trials, switched research to other countries and expressed concern that longer and tighter scrutiny will push more away.
