Retailers and builders spur recovery hopes

Retailers and housebuilders provided fresh hope of an end to the UK recession on Wednesday, in spite of mixed messages emanating from the financial sector.

A fortnight after hopes of a return to economic growth were dashed by weak third-quarter GDP figures, trading updates and financial results issued by corporate Britain contained renewed signs of either recovery or at least stabilisation.
