Unemployment falls for first time in 13 months

The number of people out of work in Britain has fallen for the first time since the spring of last year, official figures showed on Wednesday – unexpected evidence of labour market resilience in the worst recession in decades.

The Office for National Statistics said 2.469m people were unemployed and seeking a job between June and August, slightly fewer than the 2.47m unemployed between May and July. Employment also rose.
