End in sight to the Fed’s rate-tightening cycle

The Federal Reserve works hard to avoid making news. The 10-member committee that sets US overnight interest rates vets with a surgeon’s care even the slightest changes in its statements in order to avoid giving fright to financial markets.

But the minutes from the November meeting of the federal open market committee, released this week, contained far more surprises than Fed watchers have been accustomed to expect.
