Discovery of 24 genes boosts disease research

A new era in genetic research dawns today, as a consortium of 50 British research teams announces the discovery of 24 genes that play a significant role in common disorders such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease.

The £9m study, funded by the Wellcome Trust, marks the start of systematic identification of genetic risk factors for the complex disorders that cause most serious illness and premature mortality in modern societies.
