Taliban targets Kabul as poll run-off nears

Taliban militants on Wednesday declared their intention to put Kabul at the forefront of their efforts to disrupt next week’s presidential run-off election by launching a deadly assault on a United Nations residential compound and a luxury hotel.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, said five staff were killed and nine wounded in the attack. At least 25 UN workers were at the guest house.
