The Football Association was squarely in the sights of the government on Thursday when Gerry Sutcliffe, the sports minister, demanded it speed up plans to modernise.

Mr Sutcliffe is irritated at the delay in the appointment of two independent non-executive directors to the board of English football’s governing body.
