A face-off in the US Senate came closer to conclusion on Wednesday as Democrats swallowed their earlier objections to an appointment made by Rod Blagojevich, the Illinois governor under investigation for corruption.
The move, signalled by Harry Reid, Senate majority leader, paves the way to seating Roland Burris, the man chosen by Mr Blagojevich to replace Barack Obama, the president-elect, as junior senator for Illinois.
