Brown fails to secure devolved policing deal

Gordon Brown on Monday failed to broker an agreement between the Northern Ireland parties on the timing for the devolution of policing and justice, despite giving assurances that the government would fund the costs involved.

The prime minister flew to Belfast for emergency talks with the parties amid fears that Sinn Féin may bring down the executive if a deal is not struck soon on a timetable for devolution.
