Mugabe defiance puts pressure on rival

President Robert Mugabe emerged from a summit of southern Africa’s leaders on Sunday with his grip on Zimbabwe intact and with pressure apparently mounting on his arch-rival to agree to strike a power-sharing deal.

The deadlock between the ageing strongman and Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition leader who beat him in the country’s last credible elections in March, prolongs a crisis that is taking an increasingly devastating humanitarian toll.
